In this newest instalment, the plausibility presented in the first, and to a lesser extent, second game has been dropped in favour of a more self-contained story. The game said more about Chernobyl to me than a thousand news reels ever could. Despite this, the game still held a certain resonance, merely because it was tied to such a dramatic real-world event. Of course, this was before I discovered the mutant pigs and laser weaponry. I can vividly remember playing the first title, Shadow of Chernobyl, a few weeks after release, and remarking how eerie it was that a place as barren and desolate as this could exist in the real world. Customary as it may be to start reviewing any STALKER game with a brief synopsis of the Chernobyl disaster, it now feels like it has very little relevance to the franchise.
